The Megalong Valley has been host for Film makers since the 1930's...

Many films have been shot in the Megalong Valley  going back as far as 1921   with ‘Rudds New Selection’ and ‘the Blue Mountains Mystery’ followed by ‘When the Kellys Rode’.  ‘Sons of Matthew’ followed which was shot in various locations ranging from Queensland to Bondi to Megalong in 1949

When the Kellys Rode  - 1934   When The Kellys Rode (1934) - This was the English film maker, Harry Southwell's third Kelly film and the first film about the Kellys with sound. It was forbidden from being exhibited in  NSW  for more than ten years under the ban on bushranging films.

With its close proximity to Sydney  Megalong Valley  has continued to inspire cinematographers: The series, ‘Ben Hall’ (1975),  and ‘Luke’s Kingdom’ (1976); feature films such as ‘Ride on Stranger’ (1979), ‘Dangerous Summer’ (1982) and most famously ‘Mad Max III’ (1985). A tale of convict days, ‘Comrade’ followed and ‘Grievous Bodily Harm’ starring Colin Friels and John Waters was released in 1988.  More recent films include‘In the Winter Dark’ (1998) and ‘Stealth’ (2005).

Rudd's New Selection is a 1921 Australian silent  directed by Raymond Longford based on the Dad and Dave stories by  Steel Rudd  It is a sequel to

on our Selection ( 1920).

The Blue Mountains Mystery is a lost 1921 Australian  silent film  directed by  Raymond Longford and co-directed by Lottie Lyelll. Based on from the 1919 novel,  The Mount Marunga Mystery  by Harrison Owen, the screenplay adaptation was written by Lyell as ‘’The Blue Mountains Mystery’’. It was filmed in  the Blue Mountains region and Sydney Harbour.

Sons of Matthew is a 1949  Australian film directed by Charles Chauvel. The film was shot in 1947 on location in  Queensland, Australia and the studio sequences in  Sydney. Sons of Matthew took 1.5 years to complete, but it was a great success with Australian audiences when it finally opened in December 1949. The story of five brothers who homestead, with other settlers, on the virgin plateaus of the Australian bush country.

Ride on Stranger, was a Kylie  Tennant's novel  set in the 1930s have been made into television mini-series. Ride on Stranger  telling of 8 years in the life of Shannon Jones  growing up in the depressed 1930's as naive teenager in a country town to becoming a woman in the changing political scene of Sydney.

A Dangerous Summer was made in 1982  Staring  Tom Skerritt and James Mason. Howard Anderson is planning to build a mountain resort.

Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome was a 1985 film, the third installment of the Mad Max film series, a segment being filmed at Mermaids Cave on Megalong Road.

Comrades 1986  was a historical drama film  that epicts the story of the  Tolpuddle Martyrs, who were transported to  Australia in the nineteenth century.The Tolpuddle Martyrs were a group of 19th century English farm labourers who formed one of the first trade unions and started a campaign to receive fair wages.

Grievous Bodily Harm is a 1988 Australian crime film directed by Mark Joffe starring Colin Friels and John Waters. Crime reporter Tom Stewart (Colin Friels) and a cop (Bruno Lawrence) look for a deranged schoolteacher (John Waters) who goes on a murder spree while looking for the lover he thought to be dead.

In the Winters Dark  1988 Based on a novel by Tim Winton about a mysterious creature  killing a farmer's livestock.

Stealth 2005. A Sci-Fi  story about a fighter jet piloted by an artificial intelligence computer. The jet is placed on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific to learn combat maneuvers from the human pilots aboard. But when the computer develops a mind of its own, it's the humans who are charged with stopping it before it incites a war..
