In 1839 an Inn was advertised for sale at the Township of Hartley.
The Courthouse had only just been finished. Thomas Rawsthorne had
married Sophie Collits and with his untimely death in
15 Jun 1837
at the age of
42, the Inn that he was running was put up for sale in 1839.
Generally the inns were referred to by the publicans name.
Pierce was
the legal owner of the property and the licensee was Thomas Rawsthorne
and the Inn was widely known as Rawsthorne's Inn . The inn was licensed as the
The Kings Arms. When Thomas died, Sophie married
Thomas Morris 19th March 1838 and she acquired the Inn in her own name in
September 1838. She put the property up for sale on 17th May
1839. The drought was impacting on all investments, and many wealthy capitalists were being forced to the wall of insolvency. The Mt Victoria Inn was being built completed and she would have found that the trade was going to be siphoned off to the first Inn on the Western Road in the Hartley region. It does not appear to have been called the Coach and Horses under the Rawsthorne/Morris ownership. |
